Being a writer, words have become very important to me. I have realized the decline in the proper use of words in our country. Words that used to mean one thing have developed an altogether different meaning, without always being improved. Slang is rampant. Grammar rules have been thrown out the window, even by authors.
Personally, my most detested word has become “that.” I wind up sticking it in where it need not be used.
Of course, I have hated words that I will not mention, not even speak them. It’s another one of those signs that our language is deteriorating when people cannot take the time to think of a better word to use than a curse or filthy word.
What’s your opinion? Do you have a word that keeps popping up in your own vocabulary that you wish you could put a leash on? I’d like to know that I’m not alone in this.
